Instructional Materials

Like any serious initiative, Breakthrough to Literacy is much more than what comes in the box. Breakthrough is a scientifically-based conceptual framework that drives a curriculum, which, in turn, uses our carefully-researched and tested classroom instructional model and instructional materials. In the same way, Breakthrough's implementation and professional development helps classroom teachers gain the content knowledge and classroom management skills to become successful teachers of early literacy.

This section explains how these parts work together to provide the specific instruction each child needs to become a successful reader.

Breakthrough's Classroom Instructional Model

Breakthrough to Literacy's Classroom Instructional Model applies the best predictors of reading achievement to the classroom - balancing instruction in structure and meaning at the level of the child.

Teachers focus on one book each week (or longer in grades 1 through 3), using different classroom settings for specific instructional purposes. Each book is presented as a Big Book, a Take-Me-Home Book, and a pupil book, as well as in the Individual Software Instruction (ISI) and in the Book-of-the-Week or Featured Book Audio Read-Along CDs. This enables children to experience each book in multiple ways, addressing each predictor based on their own learning needs.

Breakthrough's instructional tools engage students while directly supporting the Classroom Instructional Model. Our comprehensive teacher materials include teacher guides for each Book-of-the-Week or Featured Book, guides for working with Breakthrough's curriculum, and classroom management tools.

Classroom Instructional Model

This schematic diagram of Breakthrough to Literacy's Classroom Instructional Model illustrates the relationship between classroom instruction and management.

Each component of the model is connected to a specific part of the conceptual framework. Although each instructional practice targets one part of the framework, all practices are linked to all parts of the framework.
