Book Lists with Reading Levels

These book levels provide additional information that a teacher may choose to consider when planning instruction.

Breakthrough to Literacy focuses on vocabulary and language development. The Book-of-the-Week/Featured Book Comprehension Strategies is a framework that provides a systematic way to engage children in oral language activities centered around a book.

Each day the focus book is read and discussed with the children. Repeated readings of the book, in the group setting and individually at the computer, offer all children the opportunity to be successful and feel a part of the literacy culture in the classroom. Comprehension strategies help children expand their understanding of the book as they predict, remember, integrate, create, and summarize.

In such a setting, children are able to participate in a story that may be above their independent reading levels. Small-group and individual instruction, often using the Take-Me-Home books, enables teachers to focus on the individual needs and skills of each child.
